Respirable dust is monitored for within ceramics workshops. Monitoring for respirable dust is undertaken in accordance with AS 2985-2004: Workplace atmospheres – Method for sampling and gravimetric determination of respirable dust. The method involves passing a measured volume of air through a filter of predetermined weight. The filter is reweighted at the end of the sampling period and the difference used to determine the dust the worker is exposed to during that time period. The current Australian exposure standard for Quartz (Silica Crystalline, CAS number 14808-60-7) listed on the Safe Work Australia Hazardous Substances Information System (HSIS) is 0.1 mg/m3 respriable dust (expressed as an 8-hour TWA).The current Australian exposure standard for Cristobalite (Silica Crystalline, CAS number 14464-46-1) listed on the Safe Work Australia HSIS is 0.1 mg/m3 respriable dust (expressed as an 8-hour TWA).
